Greetings birders!
Driving from Pullman to Olympia today, we stopped off at the Potholes and saw around 250 Sandhill Cranes in a field south of the lakes (which were decidedly "coot-ish" at mid-day). Really noticed a lot of C. Ravens across the state - something we're seeing more of in Nevada, and possibly a reason for the decline in our February bald eagle influx for calving time.
Another species we're seeing more of this year, which we observed today as well, is the American kestrel.
And, east of Ellensburg, we saw a really spectacular rough-legged hawk, which we're short of this year down south, so it was a welcome sight.
Happy to be birding in my home state for a while ... if there's anything notable in the Oly. area, please let me know!
Good birding, all.
