April 4, 2006. The following interesting birds have been reported in
Spokane County during the past week:

There were 9 new county year birds being: CINNAMON TEAL, COMMON LOON,
RED-NECKED GREBE, OSPREY, BARRED OWL, CASSIN'S VIREO, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED
SWALLOW, VESPER SPARROW, and GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE bringing the group year
list to 138. Check out the progress at http://www.spokaneaudubon.org/

3 CINNAMON TEAL were at Saltese Flats Mar 30 for the only report so far.
A COMMON LOON was on West Medical Lake April 3.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was on Newman Lake Mar 30. Ten were on Liberty Lake the
same day.
The first OSPREY reported was at Williams Lake April 2. There several
reports on April 3.
A BARRED OWL was seen on Mt Spokane Mar 30.
A very early CASSIN'S VIREO was seen and heard near the Little Spokane River
April 3.
A NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW was at Peone Prairie April 4.
A VESPER SPARROW was SW of Medical Lake Mar 31. Others were noted April 1st
SE of Medical Lake.
The GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE returned to Liberty Lake Mar 30th for the 4th year.
Try the corner of Molter & Valley Way.

There has been a high turnover of ducks this week. 4 male EURASIAN WIGEON
were at Philleo Lake Mar 30. They soon left. Another was at east of Cheney
on the Spangle Rd (east of Curtis Rd) April 3. Another 2 were at Philleo
Lake April 3. That's at least 14 in the county in the last 30 days!

300 SANDHILL CRANES were at Drumheller Rd & county line SW of Medical Lake
Mar 31. That's a high count for the year. This is the only place in the
county that cranes have been reported this year.

A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was seen near Spokane Mar 30 which I assume is an
early migrant. A few try to over-winter, but likely failed this winter.

SPOTTED TOWHEES were on territory by Mar 30.

RUDDY DUCK, NORTHERN SHOVELOR, and TURKEY VULTURE numbers are increasing.

3 DC CORMORANT were on Silver Lake Mar 31.

4 TREE SPARROWS were still in the west plains at MacFarlane & Ladd Mar 31.
A SAVANNAH SPARROW was with them for an unusual association.

There were a couple more GREATER YELLOWLEGS reports, but they are far from
common yet.

There was a failed attempt to see the White-headed Woodpecker last seen Mar
9 in Riverside State Park.

Good Birding,
