Actually, I think there were White Pelican records in WA throughout
the hiatus between their periods as a breeding species, and I assume
records were published in American Birds.

Here are a few from my own field records earlier than the ones cited
below:

24 flying north over Columbia NWR, Grant Co., 5 May 1974
12 at McNary NWR, Walla Walla Co., 31 Jul 1976
4 at lake north of Frenchman Hills Road west of Potholes Reservoir,
Grant Co., 16-17 May 1981
1 at lake north of Frenchman Hills Road west of Potholes Reservoir,
Grant Co., 22 May 1982
125 at Potholes Reservoir, Grant Co., 6 Aug 1983 (by this time, there
were many present throughout the summer each year)
20 at lake north of Frenchman Hills Road west of Potholes Reservoir,
Grant Co., 5 Aug 1984
3 at Potholes Reservoir, Grant Co., 10-11 May 1986

Looking through my field records, I discovered a lot of things that
made me think about population changes. For example, I saw a Double-
crested Cormorant at Ellensburg on 30 May 1987 and recorded it as an
unusual sighting! Now I scarcely ever drive across I-90 without
seeing one or more in the lakes along the road. That's another
species that has increased tremendously in recent years.
