Subject: [Tweeters] Russian Olive seed dispersal

Hi All -
One thing that hasn't been mentioned in this discussion is the method of
seed dispersal of Russian Olives as aiding spread from disturbed to
undisturbed areas. Since birds will disperse RO seeds by eating fruits it is
likely that this mechanism will allow RO to move easily from highly altered
to less altered habitats (and over some distance). It is probably difficult
to control invasion into less disturbed plant communities if there is a
large seed source nearby. A landscape approach to removing invasive species
may be the only way to prevent incursion into new areas and is presumably
the main rationale for removing them wherever they area (even in already
highly altered landscapes).
thanks, Charles.
