April 12, 2006. The following interesting birds have been reported in
Spokane County during the past week:

There were 7 new county year birds being: HORNED GREBE, AMERICAN BITTERN,
VIRGINIA RAIL, SORA, RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER, CHIPPING SPARROW, and BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRD bringing the group year list to 145. Check out the progress at
http://www.spokaneaudubon.org/

4 HORNED GREBES were at Liberty Lake April 7 for the only report so far.
An AMERICAN BITTERN and a VIRGINIA RAIL started calling at the Peone Prairie
Wetland April 8.
An early SORA called at the Peone Prairie Wetland April 5.
The first RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was reported from the lower part of Mt Spokane
on April 3. There have been a few more reports since.
The first CHIPPING SPARROW was seen April 9 at Eloika Lake with a couple
other reports April 10.
The only BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD reported was at Peone Prairie April 8.
(Sounds like Peone Prairie is the place to be!)

The rarest bird continues to be the GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE at Liberty Lake.
Try the corner of Molter & Valley Way. It has been well documented.

Shorebird migration is still slow with only a few GREATER YELLOWLEGS.

Single COMMON LOONS have been seen on West Medical, Clear, Newman & Liberty
Lakes.

The Spokane County EURASIAN WIGEON count is up to an amazing 18 in the past
30 days! Not rare!
1 at Newman Lake April 6.
A pair at Philleo Lake April 7.
1 at Silver Lake April 9.
1 at Eloika Lake April 9.

250 SANDHILL CRANES were at Drumheller Rd & county line SW of Medical Lake
April 7.

A late BOHEMIAN WAXWING was at Liberty Lake April 7.

A few more YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET reports came in.

I still have no hummingbird reports. Also no Barn or Cliff Swallows.

Good Birding,
