I am planning a trip to see the Umtanum bluebird trail with a novice birder. I've done this many times but apparently don't make records of the times I go. I know the Balsamroot is usually blooming at the same time. I would like to go when the hatchlings are still confined to the boxes, the blue streamers marking the occupied boxes. The parents are closeby making continuous trips in and out of the box. We'll look for Lewis' Woodpecker, Say's Phoebe, Horned Lark, too.
My most memorable experience on the trail was last year and it was not a bird - but a horny toad (sp?).
Can anyone recommend the dates for successful bluebird sighting? By successful, the opportunity to see 50-60 pairs of Mountain and Westerns. Reply to my email if you prefer.
Thank you,
