Kathy and Arn Slettebak and I led a bird walk at Discovery Park this
morning, and despite the threatening weather, we ended up having a good
time. Spring definitely has arrived at the park; there was lots of
singing and nest building going on. We watched a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET
gathering nest material on the ground, and CHESTNUT-BACKED and
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES going in and out of holes. Two male NORTHERN
FLICKERS spent quite awhile silently chasing each other around in
circles, while another was excavating a nest hole. We saw four
VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS, and heard one ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. The most
unusual bird of the day was a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE (spotted by
Elizabeth) in the 500 Area of the park.
