April 20, 2006. The following interesting birds have been reported in
Spokane County during the past week:

There were 9 new county year birds being: EARED GREBE, WHITE-THROATED
SWIFT,
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, BLACK-NECKED STILT, BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD,
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, CLIFF SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW
bringing the
group year list to 154. Check out the progress at http://www.

1 EARED GREBE was at Philleo Lake April 17. Two were there April 20.
WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS evidently arrived April 15 with 2 in Spokane &
12 at Seven Mile.
1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS was at Peone Prairie April 15. One was SW of
Cheney April 16 for the only other report.
1 BLACK-NECKED STILT was SW of Cheney on Lance Hill Rd April 15. It
did not stay.
The only hummer report was 1 BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD near the
Little Spokane River April 16. Calliope are late.
A great find was a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE SE of Spangle, (from Spangle/
Waverly Rd, take N Kentuck Rd north for 3 miles). It's been many years
since a Loggerhead has been reported in the county.
A CLIFF SWALLOW was at Peone Prairie April 13. Several have been
seen since.
The first BARN SWALLOW was near Four Lakes April 16 with a few seen
since.
The first & only LINCOLN'S SPARROW was on Tower Mountain April 18.

Yet another EURASIAN WIGEON was along Lance Hill Rd, SW of Cheney
April 15 & 16. Assuming that is the last report, we end with 19
EURASIAN WIGEONS in Spokane County between March 15 & April 16. This
is because of better coverage & reporting rather than more birds.

The GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE continues at the Liberty Lake golf course.
Try the corner of Molter & Valley Way.

Shorebird migration is still slow. No Dunlin.

A few COMMON LOONS are on most large lakes.

About 20 RED-NECKED GREBES are on Newman Lake. 1 to 3 have been on
SilverLake near the road.

About 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS were on the east side of Newman Lake April
19.

7 late TUNDRA SWANS were at Saltese Flats April 19.

TOWNSENDS SOLITAIRE numbers have increased in the SW part of the
county.

There were 150 AMERICAN PIPITS near Philleo Lake April 14.

15 N. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were at Philleo Lake April 14. (high
number)

18 HORNED GREBES were on Liberty Lake April 18.

CHIPPING SPARROWS are now common in the south part of the county.

A few WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS have returned.

Yesterday was the first day over 60 degrees this year in Spokane.
