Westport Seabirds had their first pelagic trip of the year this Saturday. With five regular Westport leaders and some eager seafaring birders aboard, we had a very successful day! The weather was clear and chilly with excellent visibility.
The main highlight of the day was 11 Parakeet Auklets. This is by far the highest total we have experienced on our Westport trips. This coincides with the 40 plus sightings on a research ship in these waters several weeks ago.
Other notable finds were: 2 Manx Shearwaters, 92 Black-footed Albatross, 1 Short-tailed Shearwater, 4,500 Sooty Shearwaters, 1 Red Phalarope, 6 Pomarine Jaegers, 16 Sabine's Gulls, 1 Ancient Murrelet, 53 Fork-tailed Storm-Petrels and 22 Cassin's Auklets.
Our next trip is on May 20th. For further information check our web site at www.westportseabirds.com .
