Subject: [Tweeters] NAMC in Clallam County, and owl duet

Hello, tweeters and Gary,

Clallam County also has a NAMC coming up on May 13, organized by
Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society and the Dungeness River Audubon
Center, compiled from the Center (contact = rivercenter at olympus.net).
It covers the entire county, from Discovery Bay on the east to the
ocean west of La Push. We can use some help in the upper Dungeness
that day, if anyone wants to track down Hermit Warblers, Pygmy Owls,
and some other mountain birds for us - we'll give you some clues about
where to go on count day. Other spots that need coverage include the
Sol Duc River valley and West Coast beaches, like near Lake Ozette.

I agree that the national NAMC has faded out, becoming more of an
International Migratory Bird Day festival day. We'd rather do a count,
and will likely do a count every year until we head to that great
vagrant trap in the sky.

On another note -- A curious thing happened this morning at 8 a.m., in
broad daylight while I scouted above the Dungeness Fish Hatchery. Both
a Great Horned Owl and a N. Pygmy Owl hooted at the same time for about
20 minutes on opposite sides of the canyon, almost like they were doing
a duet. The GHO was still in the shadows on the west-facing slope,
whereas the Pygmy was lit up in full sunshine in a big Doug fir on the
east-facing slope. The Pygmy never stopped tooting the whole time, but
the GHO paused once in awhile then started up again. I've had GHO
answer other owl species toots several times when I've been tooting at
night (particularly Saw-whet toots), but this is the first time it
happened during the day and, not only that, the silly little owl just
kept on tooting. How smart is this, to keep on talking with the big
meanie nearby? Meanwhile, twits close by like Townsend's and
Orange-crowned Warblers also kept on singing like they didn't even care
the owls were there.

Subject: [Tweeters] Question about NAMC (May Count)

Dear Tweeters,

Each year, we do the North American Migration Count up
here in Skagit County. However, as a national count,
it seems that the NAMC is going nowhere. No one seems
to be gathering the data.

This year, once again, I will be coordinating the
count in Skagit County--but I am wondering, where else
in Washington will the NAMC take place this year
(Saturday, May 13)?

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
