Hi Folks:
I headed down to the Kent Valley on Mon afternoon. It was quiet at Boeing
Ponds, and there were no shorebirds. The fields at S 204th were much drier
and there weren't any shorebirds except for a few Killdeer on the south side
and the north sides of the road. I went out to S 212th St, over to the base
of the hill to the light where Orillia starts up the hill. I turned south
there off of S 212th onto 42nd Ave S, and went three blocks south to the
traffic circle. At the traffic circle I headed left (east) on S 216th St
past the Riverview Homes entrance. Just beyond Riv V Homes, there is small
pulloff on the left. This is about 1/2 block from the traffic circle.
There is a new mitigated area there to the west which had no birds. On the
east of the pulloff is a large "pond" which is really a large mudhole to
collect water runoff I guess. It is a new pond, which has existed since
around Dec 2005. Around this 216th Pond is a chainlink fence. If you walk
up on the bank (slowly, the birds are skittish) you can look thru the chain
fence to the mud puddles and vegetation below. At 4:30pm there were lots of
ducks, Lesser Yellowlegs - 1, Wilson's Snipe - 1, KILL - 2, Least
Sandpipers - 16. Not the best viewing thru the fence, but you can walk to
the right a short way to get a better view thru the chainlink. This area on
216th St is just to the west of the large dirt piles which can be seen from
a distance.
Yours, Carol Schulz
