On an birding trip on the Malay Peninsula a few years ago I would often
spend the heat of the afternoon in the hotel swimming pool. A relative of
of these things swam over and took a painful chunk out of me. After that I
was on a constant vigil, and had to kill a few of them after they flew into
the pool and started their approach. Between the beetles and the intensity
of the curries, the afternoons were not uneventful.
