These midges are very common around Seattle in spring and summer Susan. This is the time of year when they first start appearing, so you may have just been out there at the "right place, right time" for the bugs. Unfortunately, this made it the "wrong place, wrong time" for you. Still, it is very common to find large numbers of these bugs in these diaphanous clouds in pretty much any park in Seattle. Perhaps they are cyclical and this is a big season?

Susan,

I think they're midges. They won't bite. Food for swallows.

Tweeters,
This evening my boyfriend and I went to the Fill to stretch our legs and try and see some of the recent sightings mentioned on Tweeters recently. However, we encountered such horrid masses of gnats ( or whatever they were) that we couldn't take it and had to leave. It was like one continuous cloud of bugs all along the main path and well into the loop ( we finally turned around and hurried out of there.) I've been a regular at the Fill for years and have never experienced such numbers of them. So I'm both issuing a warning and asking if anyone has an explanation, and knows how long this infestation should last.
