Jennifer,

Check with all of your neighbors to see if the kitty belongs to someone and ask them to keep their cat inside. Especially ask the kids in the neighborhood, as they typically know where pets live. If that fails and the kitty is friendly and looks well fed, try putting a stretch/breakaway collar on the cat with a note for the owner to call you. Also try posting a found notice. Please make absolutely sure it really is a stray before taking it to a shelter.

I haven't used it myself, but I have seen devices in catalogs with a motion sensor that you hook up to a hose. If it senses motion, it turns on and sprays the animal. Since cats especially dislike getting wet, this should help keep it out of the yard. Has anyone in Tweeterland had any experience with this type of device?

I have two different (yet unfortunately related) questions.

1. A Hermit Thrush showed up in my yard three days ago and is still here. Why would a Hermit Thrush want to stay in my yard? I'm in West Seattle, near the Alaska junction...I've got a couple large conifers and a few shrubs. But this is unquestionably residential yard. He showed up and I figured he'd leave right away, but he isn't. Has anyone had a similar visitor in not-very-good habitat?

2. As I was watching out the kitchen window in the general direction of the Hermit Thrush, lots of House Finches, and even a newly arrived Golden-crowned Sparrow, to my bewilderment and great frustration, a sleek little white cat showed up. I rushed out and scared him off. But I fear he'll be back. Any advice on traps for cats? As in, where do I get one...does anyone have one I could just borrow? I'd like to trap the cat and take it to the Humane Society. Also, hints on where to drop off errant cats would be most appreciated.

Thanks!
