This morning, while playing the 3rd hole at the Prairie Falls Golf Course in Post Falls, Id., I heard the call of a Northern Bobwhite. When I completed the round about 1:30 pm, I drove around and into the housing development where I had heard it. At this time, it's call came from across the fairway, so I walked over there to some peoples back yard and found it calling from their backyard. There were several feeders in the yard. The male was typical in appearance and very unconcerned about me observing it from 25 feet. It called about every minute or two. It's the first one I have seen for 5 or 6 years when I found a family of them crossing the Elk-Chatteroy Rd N. of Spokane.

Directions: Take the Spokane street exit at Post Falls, go N. to Poleline, E to Henry, N to the corner of Henry and Putter. There is a small golf cart path just N. of the house at 2560 N. Henry that you can use to go out to the golf course fairway. You should be able to track it down by sound. When I first heard it, it was right where that path meets the open part of the golf course. When I tracked it down across the fairway to the east side, it was in the backyard of the house with an address on the street side of 2833 Slice or thereabouts in case you want to try from that side.
