Greetings Tweeters,

This past Friday (8/4) just before the Blue Angels performed
over our home in Madrona, I heard some loud whistled ?kyews? overhead and
looked up to see three Ospreys circling and chasing one another. Even
though I have lived here, four blocks up from Lake Washington, for 40+
years, I can?t recall ever seeing Ospreys from our property. We have our
share of Red-tails and Eagles, but no Ospreys. Another Osprey was seen
overhead on Saturday.

And then, Saturday afternoon, we headed out for another trip and
saw a chunky small and tame quail on the street in front of the car. We had
to stop and shoo it out of the way. On the spot, and later reviewing the
books, I decided it must be a female or juvenile Northern Bobwhite, harking
back to my youth summers on Cape Cod, MA. It was rounder than a California,
and had no head plume, and its tail was very short. Our neighbor had seen
it a couple of days before in her yard. Its tameness and out-of-rangeness
makes me think of some sort of an escapee. Unfortunately I have no photos.

And, this morning there was a female or juvenile Rufous Hummer
visiting the flowers in our back yard. We are mostly Anna?s territory, and
see only a few Rufous a year. And I thought they might be up in the
mountain meadows by now.

May you all have similarly curious birding from your homes.
