Subject: [Tweeters] Imperial Like Woodpeckers

Hello All,
Today while performing snag transects/woodpecker surveys through the site of
last Augusts School Fire (50,000 acres burned) in Garfield and Columbia
Counties I had a pair of adult Pileated Woodpeckers fly in and start
foraging for grubs right in front of me. These Pileated looked very
different from the expected plumaged birds. They were almost completely
black with only the faintest outline of the white facial plumage. The red
crests were the only normal looking thing about these birds. They were
foraging on burnt trees and were covered in soot and powdered burnt bark.
Interesting to see how they looked like Imperial Woodpeckers at a glance.
