Dear Tweeters,

Yesterday there were lots of birds along the trail
from Rainy Pass to Cutthroat Pass (Skagit County).
Most surprising was a single White-winged Crossbill
that joined a flock of birds harrassing me as I
imitated a pygmy owl.

Red-shafted Flicker: 2;
Olive-sided Flycatcher: 3 or 4, a few still singing;
Violet-green Swallow: 3 migrants at Cutthroat Pass;
Clark's Nutcracker: three at the pass, others below;
Grey Jay: four in the subalpine forest, two below;
Steller's Jay: 1;
Mountain Chickadee: 15 or more, mostly in subalpine;
Chestnut-backed Chickadee: 5 or so in forest;
Red-breasted Nuthatch: a few;
Brown Creeper: 1;
Winter Wren: 1;
American Robin: 15 or so, mostly near the pass;
Varied Thrush: 1 at trail's start;
Hermit Thrush: 2;
Townsend's Solitaire: 1 just below pass;
Golden-crowned Kinglet: many here and there;
Wilson's Warbler: 4 or 5;
Townsend's Warbler: 7 or 8;
Yellow-rumped Warbler: 4 or 5;
MacGillivray's Warbler: 1 in brush below pass;
Chipping Sparrow: 2 +, adult & juvenile, below pass;
Oregon Junco: lots of them;
Evening Grosbeak: 2 at start of trail;
Pine Siskin: six or seven here and there;
White-winged Crossbill: one, seen at beginning of
subalpine habitat near a spot where a mylar balloon
was snagged in a small tree.

I am once again glad I did not waste a day looking for
boobies. It was beautiful up there--except for the
view of the giant smoke plume loomin above Winthrop,
far to the east.

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
