Tweets,

The Horned Puffin off Discovery Park is a King County first, of course, and the Tufted Puffin is just the fourth record. The King Eider report from Bothell seems most out of character, given habitat and season, but maybe it escaped from some collection.

I hiked the crest trail from Tacoma Pass to Snowshoe Butte as part of my King County borders project and noted one juvenile Red-naped Sapsucker and a female presumably Sooty Grouse with two large young.

I swung south to Auburn and Kent on my way home to see if there were any shorebirds of note. Not many. At a tiny wetland just south of the bike trail south of the Green River NRA [accesssible off 226th behind the Diapora (sp?) wharehouse] there were ten peeps, two adults, eight juveniles, with legs of rather indeterminate color (due to the mud?), mostly looking rather dark greenish gray. The adults were quite blackish above, probably due to having any feather margins eroded away. Checking Dennis's first shorebirds book I now suspect they were all Least's, though at the time I had no idea.

Other wise, just two Lesser Yellowlegs and another Least with two or three Green Herons at the Boeing Ponds.

Tweeters,
Today just before noon I found an adult TUFTED PUFFIN swimming
just off the West Point lighthouse in Seattle's Discovery Park, amongst
a loose flock of Glaucous-winged Gulls. Alas, if that's the word, no
sign of any Horneds, but further off was tight raft of about a dozen
Rhino Auklets together with two birds that showed a lot of white on
their sides - *possibly* Common Murres. Great week (or so) for
alcids at the park!
