Wednesday August 23, 2006:
A family of eleven CALIFORNIA QUAIL have been visiting a backyard each
afternoon in the 1100 block of Walkem Road in Ladysmith. The quail come in,
eat and hunker down in the shade of the fruit trees for a while.

Tuesday August 22:
One OSPREY, a BALD EAGLE and a RED-TAILED HAWK were seen flying over the end
of Kaye Road in Parksville.

Monday August 21:
A pair of OSPREY were spotted flying over Nanaimo Lakes Road by the dam in
Nanaimo.

Sunday August 20:
A MERLIN was seen and photgraphed at the Beaver Pond near Enos Lake in
Nanoose Bay.
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, a WARBLING VIREO,
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, DOWNY WOODPECKER, BEWICK'S WRENS, WINTER WRENS,
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, DARK-EYED JUNCOS,
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and SPOTTED TOWHEES were seen on the Cable Bay Trail
in Cedar,
Twelve CALIFORNIA QUAIL were seen at the end of Evergreen Street in
Parksville.

The Sunday Bird Walk went to McGregor Marsh, in Nanaimo. Eighteen birders
found the following twenty-six species:

Cooper's Hawk
Merlin
Belted Kingfisher
Northern Flicker
Pacific-slope Flycatcher
Cassin's Vireo
Cedar Waxwing
Northwestern Crow
Common Raven

Black-throated Gray Warbler
Wilson's Warbler
Western Tanager
Spotted Towhee
Song Sparrow
Red Crossbills
Purple Finch

American Goldfinch

Saturday August 19:
A CASSIN'S VIREO and a BLACK-THROATED WARBLER were seen in a yard along
Northwest Bay Road in Nanoose Bay.
A pair of adult CALIFORNIA QUAIL with nine little tennis-ball sized chicks
were visiting a yard along Ventura Drive in Nanaimo.

Friday August 18:
A large flock of CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES and several ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS
are visiting feeders in the 5600 block of Lost Lake Road in Nanaimo.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES are coming to feeders in a yard just north of the
Little Qualicum River.
A pair of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES are making frequent visits to feeders in
the 1000 block of Forgotten Drive in the San Pareil area of Parksville.
Two TURKEY VULTURES were seen at Neck Point Park in Nanaimo.

Thursday August 17:
Twelve TURKEY VULTURES were seen at the foot of Tweedhope Road in
Lantzville--six were soaring on thermals, three were perched on trees and
three were in the front yard.
A female PEREGRINE FALCON was seen over the Breton Page Road in Ladysmith.
