It's been a pretty good month for yardbirds and other critters, too. This
morning we had a juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk grab one of our chickadees for
breakfast. This happens, so I just picked up the camera and took a few
pictures. But the danged thing didn't leave! It flew into the nearby pine
tree and proceeded to play with the now dead bird like a cat does, dropping
it and then diving down to retrieve it and so on. After a few minutes of
this he finally got down to business and finished his breakfast, or so I
thought. After sitting a few more minutes he dove onto the brush pile I have
for bird protection and grabbed a junco. At this point I walked outside but
he went out of sight. Then about 10 minutes later, darned if he didn't come
back again just as I was headed out to photograph a dragonfly. I hollered
and he landed on a fencepost in corner of the yard and looked at me while I
hollered and waved at him. But he didn't leave, so finally I just took a
couple more pictures and then went about photographing the dragonfly.
Sometime while I was about that he left. Greedy young punk!!
