How common are Hairy Woodpeckers with the buff coloring?

I note in Sibley that this is a Pacific version but I haven't noticed this
before. I have a friend with a suet feeder and for the last month she has
had a male Hairy coming to her feeder and he is almost entirely buff where
others are white. He was very tolerant of up close and personal looks. He
kept feeding while we stood not more than 5 or 6 feet away on the deck.
