West of the Cascades, the buffy or "dirty brown" coloring is actually more common than the whiter belly. I imagine there is some back and forth going on, and possibly some intergrades, because we do see both types here on occasion.

before. I have a friend with a suet feeder and for the last month she has
had a male Hairy coming to her feeder and he is almost entirely buff where
others are white. He was very tolerant of up close and personal looks. He
kept feeding while we stood not more than 5 or 6 feet away on the deck.
