Tweeters,

An update on the nocturnal migration over my patch of Battle Ground, WA.

Both Saturday and Sunday morning produced good audible nocturnal
movements of passerines over Battle Ground. The predominant species
both mornings was Swainson's Thrush. The majority of the birds were
recorded between 5:00 am and 5:45 am although my observation started at
about 4:30am both mornings. 5-5:45 appears to be the optimal time since
most thrushes are descending from their high migration altitude and can
more easily be heard.

Saturday:

Swainson's Thrush 100

Savannah Sparrow 3

Yellow Warbler 5

Bunting (Presumed Lazuli) 1

Western Tanager 6

Western Sandpiper (!) 1

Sunday:

Swainson's Thrush 150*

Yellow Warbler 2

Savannah Sparrow 6

Western Tanager 2

The first Swainson's Thrushes took off from my neighborhood at about
9:30pm Saturday night. If I extrapolate from the 150 between 5-5:45 and
start that rate at 9:30pm, a total of approximately 1,650 Swainson's
Thrushes flew over the house Saturday night - Sunday morning.

Get Out There at night!
