Mark and others,

If I'm reading this correctly, nobody has directly answered your question,
i.e. which species should you learn first?

This is highly subjective, of course, but for the Seattle area I might start
with the following, just off the top of my head:

American Robin
Varied Thrush
Swainson's Thrush
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Spotted Towhee
Bushtit
Black-capped Chickadee
Chestnut-backed Chickadee
Bewick's Wren
Brown Creeper
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
American Goldfinch (your state bird!)
Belted Kingfisher
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Steller's Jay

There are plenty of other birds which people might want to add to (or
subtract from) the list, but if you learned the songs and/or calls of these
birds, you'd be off to a good running start.
