Those who believe we should not feed birds, watch whales or otherwise
interfere with wildlife forget the old adage, "out of sight out of mind."
Birdwatching and wildlife viewing create important "constituencies" for
protecting and preserving wildlife habitat. The hugely profitable
industries that have grown up around birdwatching, wildlife viewing and
ecotourism provide important political capital when it comes to promoting
legislation and support for habitat protection. They raise awareness and
sensitivity. Discouraging people from these activities would only diminish
awareness. Those who champion wildlife and the environment would have less
power and political support. Those who profit from the destruction of
habitat would have less opposition. On balance, wildlife benefits from our
enjoyment of them. In today's political and economic climate, they need us
more than ever.
