Hi, tweeters.

Too bad those small liberal-arts universities in Tacoma continue to
be confused. PLU (Pacific Lutheran University) has a small teaching
collection, but I don't think they are adding to it. UPS (University
of Puget Sound) has the Slater Museum of Natural History, with the
second largest collection of bird specimens in the Northwest (after
the UW's Burke Museum). The Slater is just as interested in receiving
good specimens (i.e., not mashed road kills) as the Burke, so you
have two options. If you are in the Seattle area, you can e-mail me,
and I can arrange to get the specimen from you. If you are on Vashon
Island or in the Tacoma area, e-mail Gary Shugart (gshugart at ups.edu),
and he can do the same. Some birds seem to kill themselves so often
against windows that the local collections receive them constantly.
This list includes immature female Sharp-shinned Hawks, American
Robins, Varied Thrushes (unless you find one of the white-bellied
ones!), and Pine Siskins. Just about anything else is of interest.
I'm not speaking for the Burke - they may still want to immortalize
more of these commonly mortalized birds. Seattle Audubon makes good
use of bird specimens, but anything rare or unusual should be donated
to one of the natural-history museums where it will be kept in a
research collection.

Please wrap it up as Rob Sandeling pointed out. The collection info
is essential, and a sealed bag will keep it in good condition for as
long as you're willing to have it in your freezer.

On a live-bird note, it sure is fun to see Varied Thrushes out in the
yard every time I look out the window!
