That's really nice to hear about an unknown dead bird turning out to be a Peregrine Falcon. I once took a phone call about a dead banded Peregrine Falcon picked up along the road by the Port of Tacoma and drove to the guy's house in Sumner to pick it up only to see that it was a homing pigeon. The man was a bit embarassed.

Seattle Audubon also takes birds "preserved" just as you describe, Rob. They have a retired physician who took the course at the Burke Museum--he prepares the birdskins for use in the FUN Program (Finding Urban Nature, for school-aged kids) and other studies/demonstrations. They are at 8050 35th Ave NE in Seattle, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon-Sat.

Also, this makes me recall the experience of a friend of mine from Port Orchard, who was reading in his easy chair with his sliding glass doors open. A sparrow flew in, pursued by a raptor. The sparrow was able to make a quick U-turn, but the raptor flew into the wall and landed dead in my friend's lap. A non-birder, he had no clue as to what it was, but after calling around, he took it to either PLU (or UPS?) where it was identified as a Peregrine Falcon and gladly accepted for their collection! He was still in a bit of shock when he told us his story at work that week!

the first thing to do is to wrap it in a paper towel or napkin, put it into a zip lock bag, then on a slip of paper put the location and date and species of the bird, then put it in your freezer. Then contact the Burke museum to see if they want the bird, often they want local birds in order to trade with other institutions. If they don't want it, and you have the energy check with the PLU museum, if nobody is interested, take it outside and bury it. Technically its illegal to possess birds, but holding them for a institution is OK and the game department is very not interested in hassling people for what one biologists called, ditty birds. Now a peregrine falcon, that's a different story......

Hey Tweeters,
Yesterday I found a Ruby-Crowned Kinglet as I was coming out of the post office. Apparently it had flown into a window moments after I walked inside. I took it home hoping it was only stunned and I would be able to release it, but it never recovered.

What's the best way to deal with this situation? Call WA Fish and Wildlife? Donate it to a museum or college for a study skin? Any suggestions are appreciated.
