Jim,
Welcome to Tweeters! It sounds like you came face to face with an agitated Ruby Crowned Kinglet. That's a treat 'cause they don't often show off their ruby head stripe.

Hello. This is my first post to tweeters, so I apologize in advance if I'm
doing it wrong.
A few minutes ago, a small bird similar to a Bewick's wren hopped up on the
railing right outside the kitchen door, two feet from my face. He had short
wing bars, eye rings, and a bright, iridesent red stripe on the top of his
head, about 3/16ths of an inch wide and an inch and a half long, running
beak to tail. Who is this? I am a beginning birder, and I couldn't find it
in any of my bird guides.
This bird was spotted near Eagle Landing Park in Burien.
Thanks.
