Dear Washington birders,

The Emperor Goose was seen my many birders this morning (Friday) in the
same spot
near Snohomish. This completed my first week of winter birding in
Washington, and
was my 14th North American Life List new bird this week. Here's the total:

12/5 ELWAS trip led by Brian Bell to Sagit Flats and Sammish Island:
Trumpeter Swan
Rough-legged Hawk
Northern Shrike
Pacific Loon
Mew Gull
12/6 Volunteer Park
Red-breasted Sapsucker
12/7 Whidbey Island
Black Oystercatcher at Deception Pass State Park-West Beach
Penn Cove:
Barrow's Goldeneye
Surfbird
Black Turnstone (The two shorebirds were feeding on the mussel platforms)
12/7 Snohomish:
Emperor Goose
I used "A Birder's Guide to Washington" by Hal Opperman, "Birding in Seattle
and King County" by Eugene Hunn, and gleaned info from "Tweeters". Most of
all,
I was helped repeatedly and generously by local Washington birders, both in
person
and on-line. Thanks to all for helping me make this a great week. You have
a beautful part of the country here and fantastic birding! If you could
only do something about that traffic on I-5. I can see why so many folks
want to live here.

Dear Tweeters,

Having to take a day off for a doctor's appointment
wasn't so bad after all. I raced down from Skagit
County after the appointment, to find the Emperor
Goose right there where it has been reported, on the W
side of SR 9, just S of Marsh Road, on the SW side of
the town of Snohomish. The bird was with a Greater
White-fronted Goose. Another 13 or so of these
Greater-white-fronts foraged apart from the odd
couple. Lots of Trumpeter Swans, a few Tundra Swans,
quite a few Cackling Geese, a few Canada Geese, and a
few Glaucous-winged Gulls were also foraging in the
field. Single American Pipit and Northern Harrier were
there. Also, the Greater-white Fronted Geese were
being mean to a couple of Dunlin, chasing after them
and flushing them now and then.

After finding four species of geese in one field,
which I think is the most geese species I had ever
seen in one day, I decided, the heck with report
cards! I went to Fir Island, where Snow Geese were of
course all over the place. Then I zipped up to Padilla
Bay at dusk, in time to find a few thousand Brant out
on the bay. Six species of geese in one day! I doubt I
will ever see that again!

Now if I could just get the last of these darn cards
printed off....
