Sunday December 10, 2006:
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was spotted in with a flock of CANADA GEESE at
the 8th Fairway at Fairwinds Golf Course in Nanoose Bay.
The Sunday Bird Walk went to Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo. Among the
highlites were a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL roasting on the lower branches of a
fir tree giving us great looks. An AMERICAN BITTERN gave two of the group a
quick look as it flew into the reeds.
Seven birders found the following thirty-six species: GREAT BLUE HERON,
CANADA GOOSE, RING-NECKED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, HOODED
MERGANSER,COOPERS HAWK, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, AMERICAN BITTERN,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, ROCK PIGEON, DOWNY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER,
STELLER'S JAY, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE, BROWN CREEPER, BEWICK'S WREN,
MARSH WREN, AMERICAN ROBIN, VARIED THRUSH,RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, EUROPEAN
STARLING, SPOTTED TOWHEE, FOX SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW,
DARK-EYED JUNCO, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, HOUSE FINCH, PURPLE FINCH, PINE
SISKIN, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and HOUSE SPARROWS.

Saturday December 09:
COMMON and HOODED MERGANGERS, BUFFLEHEAD, BARROWS and COMMON GOLDENEYES,
BELTED KINGFISHER, SHORT-EARED OWLS, NORTHERN HARRIER, TRUMPETER SWANS,
PIED-BILLED GREBE, PILEATED WOODPECKERS, GREAT BLUE HERONS, BALD EAGLES,
COMMON RAVENS and NORTHWESTERN CROWS were seen at the Nanaimo River Estuary
in south Nanaimo.

Friday December 08:
PIED BILLED GREBE, GREAT BLUE HERON, TRUMPTER SWAN, SURF SCOTER, BUFFLEHEAD,
COMMON GOLDENEYE, BARROWS GOLDENEYE, COMMON MERGANSER, RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER, SHARP SHINNED HAWK, BALD EAGLE, AMERICAN COOT, SHORT-EARED OWLS,
NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHERN CROW, COMMON RAVEN, EUROPEAN STARLING, SONG
SPARROW, SPOTTED TOWHEE and DARK-EYED JUNCOS were seen at the Nanaimo River
Estuary in South Nanaimo

Tuesday December 05:
Two GYRFALCONS were seen perched and flying over the old Rutherford Golf
Course behind the Grand Hotel in Nanaimo.
Two ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS are visiting feeders along Drake Street in Nanaimo.

Monday December 04:
AN ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD was spotted at feeders in the 500 block of Westview
Place in Nanaimo.

Sunday December 03:
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was spotted in a backyard in the 1100 block of Walker
Road in Ladysmith.
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS and BALD EAGLES are visiting a yard in the 1300 block
of Lanyon Drive in Parksville.
VARIED THRUSH, a pair of ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS, STELLER'S JAYS, RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, HOUSE FINCH and CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES are visiting a yard in
the 4600 block of Lost Lake Road in Nanaimo.
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was spotted at suet feeders in the Dashwood area of
Qualicum Beach.
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, PINE SISKINS, NORTHERN
FLICKERS, DARKEYED JUNCOS, SPOTTED TOWHEES, STELLER'S JAYS, EUROPEAN
STARLINGS, VARIED THRUSH, DOWNY WOODPECKERS and a PILEATED WOODPECKER were
seen in a yard along 1600 Marine Circle in Columbia Beach.

Tuesday November 28:
24 TRUMPETER SWANS were sighted at Brannen Lake in North Nanaimo.
A pair of RUFOUS HUMMINBIRDS were seen in the 200 block of Wedge Place in
the Country Club area of Nanaimo.
WESTERN MEADOWLARK were seen sitting on a fench along 1100 block of Ganske
Road in Qualicum Beach.
