La Frambois road has been a particularly rich source of buteos this past week. The HARLAN'S REDTAIL was there both Friday and Saturday as was a ROUGHLEG and about six light-phase REDTAILS. This little stretch of road is only about a mile long.

Carol Ledford and I went out to Washougal for the
Long-tailed Duck and struck out. We were only there
about 30-40 min between 10:30 & 11:15 or so.

For the balance of the day we dinked around S of
Vancouver Lake on La Frambois Rd, where we had a
HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK. Then we went and all the
way out to the end of NW Lower River Road W of
Vancouver Lake where the road washed out and is
closed. At that site ~2:45 we had a hunting Male
SHORT-EARED OWL that landed on the Ridgefield NWR sign
there about 50 feet from the car. Great views as he
sat there fore at least 5 min or more before heading
out to a rodent, which when he got airborne with it,
he was immediately attached by a fem N. Harrier and
dropped it. Neither bird got the prize.
