I am unsure why they sell safflower seeds here, unless it is soley to offer something squirrels dislike. Back east, safflower is marketed to be sold as a food for Northern Cardinals. Cardinals will eat it when pretty much others don't, making cardinal only feeders a reality for people that want cardinals to have a place to eat all to themselves. However, when I lived in NY, I offered safflower for awhile and cardinals did eat it, but preferred the sunflower...surprise, surprise. However, titmice and chickadees would also eat it, so it wasn't a complete waste. To sell it here is surprising, since none of the NW birds are really known to eat it to the extent cardinals are. I would say not to waste your time and just offer the tried and true seeds, sunflower and white-proso millet.
