as for the sunflower, that is what will happen. funny you should mention
the millet...

my jays love the millet (as do the juncoes), and will do almost anything
acrobatic to get at that feeder... it must be worth it to them, as they
will fly in to the feeder over and over, missing 4 of 5 attempts (maybe
more; let's face it, they are MUCH too large to perch on the feeder) in
order to get a quick mouthful...

lastly, and i meant to mention this this morning, but got busy, yada yada...
during part of the windstorm, i watched as a lone black-capped chickadee
used the sunflower feeder as a windbreak... he sat there, quite content to
be out of the main wind, and not once in 10 minutes i watched did he feed on
the seed. i thought it strange, then my gaze wandered back to the forest
where tall firs were waving like drunken sailors...

not so strange after all...

I am unsure why they sell safflower seeds here, unless it is soley to
offer something squirrels dislike. Back east, safflower is marketed to be
sold as a food for Northern Cardinals. Cardinals will eat it when pretty
much others don't, making cardinal only feeders a reality for people that
want cardinals to have a place to eat all to themselves. However, when I
lived in NY, I offered safflower for awhile and cardinals did eat it, but
preferred the sunflower...surprise, surprise. However, titmice and
chickadees would also eat it, so it wasn't a complete waste. To sell it
here is surprising, since none of the NW birds are really known to eat it to
the extent cardinals are. I would say not to waste your time and just offer
the tried and true seeds, sunflower and white-proso millet.
