Hi Tim:

I've seen kinglets feeding on the ground after snow has melted off enough to expose small amounts of ground, as well as after wind and rain storms. Once they foraged within a few inches of my boots - quite fun to look down at them, though I suspect they were so close because they were really hungry.

This afternoon in my backyard here in Elma while the winds were blowing hard I noticed some very small birds working the ground beneath some tall firs we have. I was surprised to see they were Golden-crowned Kinglets. I don't think I have ever seen kinglets on the ground. They too must have had enough of this wind already.
