Hi Tweets,
The 18th Moses Lake CBC was held yesterday amid mostly brilliant sunshine
with cool temperatures. Morning temps hovered around 20 degrees and never
rose much above 35. Much of Moses Lake which had been thawed re-froze Friday
night.
In spite of the radical changes overnight 11 participants managed to cover
the areas well and produce a surprising number of highlights.
The count tallied 88 species and another 2 species during count week, which
is well above the average of 78 species, and just a below the high of 93
species.
The total number of birds counted was 75,413 individuals. This is slightly
low, but due mainly to the lower numbers of waterfowl which moved from the
count circle during the overnight freeze.
Highlights included:
New birds for the count:
Long-tailed Duck - 1 bird
American Dipper - 1 bird
Red Crossbill - 1 bird
High Count Records:
Great Blue Heron - new 86/old 82
Black-crowned Night-Heron - new 111/old 88
Ring-necked Duck - new 332/old 139
Red-tailed Hawk - new 58/old 53
Greater Yellowlegs - new 8/old 6
Belted Kingfisher - new 8/old 7
Spotted Towhee - new 8/old 5
High Count Tied:
Great Egret - 1
Merlin - 4
Eurasian Collared Dove - 11
Bewick's Wren - 11
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
Other highlights included a beautiful dark-morph Harlan's, 4 Great Scaup
observed in flight (2 records), a Barrow's Goldeneye (4 records), Horned
Grebe (3 records), Double-crested Cormorant (5 records), Least Sandpiper (2
records), Long-billed Dowitcher (2 records), Thayer's Gull (CW) Greater
White-fronted Goose (CW), Slate-colored Junco (4 records), Common Redpoll (2
records).
Notable misses included no waxwings of any kind, no Red-breasted Nuthatch,
no Wilson's Snipe, and no American Tree Sparrows.
All in all it was a great count. All participants did a fabulous job. The
homemade chili and clam chowder feed was well received at the end of a cold
day, and all participants had a great time.
Hope you can make it next year.
Cheers
Doug Schonewald
