Dear Tweeters,

On the North Cascades Christmas Bird Count, just about
every party reported Common Redpolls (Saturday,
12-16-06). Areas covered included Newhalem, Lake
Diablo, the Newhalem ("Ag") Ponds and County Line
Ponds, and along State Highway 20 westward to the
North Cascades National Park sign. One flock of
redpolls was seen in Skagit County, the rest being in
Whatcom. Numbers of redpolls for the count circle were
well into the hundreds.

Bob Kuntz and I had a quick look at a Pine Grosbeak in
Newhalem, at the west end of town, north of the
highway, near the old llama pen.

On the Bellingham CBC on Sunday, I enjoyed excellent
looks at three Pine Grosbeaks near Sunset Pond, just
north of I-5. The location was along the Squalicum
Creek trail, near a section of old railway track,
behind an insulation business. There was a russet
bird, a bird with some red on it, and a very
cherry-red individual. I understand that quite a few
parties reported Pine Grosbeaks on the count, so it
should be possible to find more grosbeaks in the
Bellingham area in the coming days.
