Hi Tweeters,

Yesterday during the Rainier CBC my team met at Boeing
Ponds. We flushed the Cackling Goose flock when we
approached the back pond. A Peregrine Falcon went
right after the flock. I'm not sure if any single
goose was targeted but a few crash landed. Then Carol
Stoner and I walked around the road side where the
Cacklers had landed. They were plenty nervous but
only two flushed. Again the Peregrine went on the
offensive. This time one goose was clearly targeted
and it started calling a very piteous call as the
Peregrine was closing in. The goose then dropped and
crash landed head first into the pond. It survived
the attack. It was amazing to be such a close witness
to this. The Peregrine actively hunted unsucessfully
a Rock Pigeon. Eventually it had to resort to frozen
food, it retrieved a cache from the Boeing Building
crevice, as witnessed by Charlie Wright and his father
Gordon. What a start to the day!

Boing Ponds can be accessed by Orillia Rd exit from
I-5, go east off the exit. At the KOA stoplight turn
left and the ponds are at the elbow of this road. The
falcon likes to roost on the tall Boeing Building and
hang out in the crevice near the top.
