Tweeters and Inland Birders,

Here are some of the highlights of the Penticton, BC Christmas Bird
Count, held yesterday, December 17. Penticton is one of the 4
CBCs in the Okanagan Valley that regularly records over, or at
least close to, 100 species. It is located only about 40 miles
north of Oroville, WA.

Subject: [bcbirds] Penticton Christmas count

Hi birders:

Well, the birding karma did actually drift south from Kelowna for a perfect
day at the Penticton Christmas Bird Count. The unofficial total is now
110, equalling Kelowna's remarkable total; both are records for the
counts. Some of the highlights:

Chestnut-backed Chickadees: seen by at least 5 groups
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL: 1 2nd winter bird by the Peach
Eared Grebe: 2 in Penticton and Naramata
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD: Summerland
Spruce Grouse: 2 seen by Doug Brown up Reservoir Road
Blue Grouse: 17(!) seen by Doug Brown up Reservoir Road (all in one group)
Northern Pintail: 1 male in Summerland (Eva Durance, Tanya Luszcz))
Eurasian Wigeon: 1 male, Trout Creek Point (Laurie Rockwell)
Green-winged Teal: 1, southwest Penticton, Bob Handfield, Jim Shaver,
Jim Bryan
Horned Lark (2) and Snow Bunting (4) on Munson's Mtn., Michael Bezener
Mountain Bluebird: 1 pair, northeast Penticton, Jim Ginns
Cackling Goose: 19, Naramata, Russell Cannings
White-winged Crossbill: 2, Carmi Road, Laure Neish

Many groups remarked on the good ponderosa pine cone crop and subsequent
high numbers of Cassin's Finches, Clark's Nutcrackers and even Red-winged
Blackbirds.

Princeton tomorrow!
