Hi all,

NEWS

What?s the most tenuous lead in sports? Is it a 4th quarter lead in the Superbowl or a 9th inning lead in the World Series? No, it?s a late-December lead in the YardBirdRace!

By our calculations this currently belongs to ROB CONWAY working a dead list (he?s moved) from Newcastle that had so many highlights we just use Black Bear to give people the idea. Total 111 species.

But there are people out there who could enter in the next 15 minutes that might be able to make that lead a historical artifact.

And then there are Racers who might just need to update. DIANE MULHOLLAND in Port Hadlock was at 98 a while ago. PATRICK & RUTH SULLIVAN were at 94, as was DON NORMAN (Edmonds), & JIM DANZENBAKER at 93 in Clark Co. when last updates came in.

Other high counters include DENNIS DESILVIS, in acreage in Roy, with 89 at last count, GARY BLETCH in Skagit with 83 at last count, and CAROLYN EAGAN with 93 in Port Ludlow. Wahkiakum Co. is living up to its rep as ANDREW EMLEN was at 78 and GEORGE EXUM at 76 when last heard from.

Here in the cities and the burbs lists aren?t in the stratosphere but there are lots of new records and tight races, with CHRISTINE SOUTHWICK (Seattle?s Lakeview) , AMY COLE (Madrona), TAYLER BROOKS (Brier), SCOTT HOSKIN (Ballard) among others beating old records handily. GENE STAGNER was setting a new Tacoma mark with 69 including LEWIS?S WOODPECKER. BILL MORRIS is setting a new mark in Green Lake.

Leading Seattle Residential are last year?s winners JO HOFMANN/JEANNE MARAZZO of Upper Rainier Beach with 60 and in Urban MATT DUFORT(Wallingford) & BRETT WOLFE (U-district) were tied at 39 each while SHARON BAKER/RICK DROKER are in front in W with 70.

A close race in West Seattle Residential is yet to be resolved where PENNY ROSE, with a WESTERN MEADOWLARK and JIM FLYNN/MARISSA BENEVENTE with a WESTERN SCREECH OWL are very close.

CYNTHIA FAUBION (Mt. Baker) and BOBBY & CURT PEARSON (Hillman City) both are at an excruciating -1 from tying records,

Apologies to the many I didn?t mention in my haste and desire not to overload tweeters--

NEW PRIZE to help the CERULEAN WARBLER:

New prize, quantity 10 or 12: YardBirdRace will donate $100 each in the name of 10 or 12 YardBirdRacers to the SAVE the CERULEAN WARBLER campaign. The AMERICAN BIRD CONSERVANCY wants every bird club in America to ante up $1000 minimum and the YardBirdRace is signed on! Cerulean Warbler is the fastest declining neotropical migrant songbird in the U.S., according to the ABC and has servious wintering habitat problems in Northern South America. The Cerulean Warbler isn't a WA state bird, of course, but maybe we can get some synergy going here, since the Cerulean Warbler is a bird that looks for a place in the forest that features a recently-blown-down-large tree for its nest site.

Other prizes will still be available including a certain number of memberships in BIRDLIFE INTERNATIONAL, 10 books?Birds-- by Kenn Kaufman which make a great gift for 10-80 year olds, membership in local Audubon Societies and last but not least one year subs to the superb magazine WASHINGTON BIRDER. (My supplier of Violet-green Swallow nest boxes has given up. Anybody have a source for these?)
