Today, my mother and I went up to Ridgefield NWR (~4mi
W of I-5 at Exit 14 in SW Washington;
http://www.fws.gov/ridgefieldrefuges/ ).

Nothing seen was unexpected or unhoped for today, but
it was a very pleasant day with sunny skies and good
birds.

RED-SHOULDERED HAWK: This first year bird was again
in the second half of the Oregon Ash woodland below
the Kiwa Trail parking lot. It was fairly active
today, making two strikes and hitting on the first.
It was also harassed some by a Red-tailed Hawk. Good
and close views were had from as close as 35feet to
about 150 feet, we saw front, back and under and upper
wings. Very Nice!

GREAT HORNED OWL and SWAMP SPARROW: Both these
species were in the same area as the Red-shouldered
Hawk. I heard at least three Swamp Sparrows chipping.
The Owl was snoozing at the wetland edge of the
woods.

BALD EAGLE: two adults and at least two sub adults.
Late in the day I saw an adult carrying off some
duck/coot as it flew E. I did not see the take, only
the flyby about 50yds in front of the windshield at
T-pole height. The sub adults were quite active.

HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK: flying in front of the blind
and perched in the woods at the blind.

WHITE-TAILED KITE: This bird was seen a bit S of its
usual perch atop the snag/bramble spot. We saw it
perched on weed tops, flying and hovering; all in good
light.
