Seabirding at pnp is generally better on the ebb tide because of the large
eddy area formed west of the point. Zooplankton, baitfish, and predators
congregate in this area. If the wind is from the south you also get some upwelling
on the ebb bringing more food organisms to the surface. The hour before and
after the high and low tides may also be good because of the rips moving
through the point area during the change of tide. If I had 3 hours to bird
tomorrow at Point No Point I would arrive at 11:00 and stay until 2 or 3pm. In
addition morning is generally better than afternoon. Thus an out/ebb tide in the
morning is most productive for watching seabirds at pnp. North winds tend to
be the worst for birding at pnp whatever tide.
However I have had good birding at times on all tide stages over the
years so if you can only come on the in tide don't be discouraged.
