Hello everyone,
Below is a quick summary of the Wahkiakum Christmas
Bird Count. I'll send each participant a spreadsheet of
results and a more detailed summary assoon as I sort it out
and add it up. Meantime, here's the preliminary version in
case Mike wants to post a general summary for Tweeters or OBOL.

On Friday December 29, 18 counters plus four feeder
watchers participated in the ninth Wahkiakum Christmas Bird
Count. The Wahkiakum Count straddles the Lower Columbia River,
including the Julia B. Hansen and Lewis & Clark National
Wildlife Refuges and the towns of Brownsmead, Knappa
& Westport in Oregon and Cathlamet & Skamokawa on the Washington
side. Weather was overcast with a high temperature of 43 degrees,
a low of 31degrees, a southeast wind of an average of 8mph and
occasional light rain.?
? ? The preliminary species count is 111, above our average
of 106. Three species found were new to the Wahkiakum CBC:
a Northern Mockingbird on Puget Island, WA; a Prairie Falcon
at the end of Fish Road in Brownsmead, OR; and? a Lewis??
Woodpecker on Tenasillahe Island, OR. Other notable
finds included Brant, Pelagic Cormorant, and Savannah Sparrow.
?Streaked? Horned Larks were found on dredge spoil islands
of the Lewis & Clark Refuge. One lone Townsend?s Warbler proved
to be the only warbler found on count day. Gulls also appeared
in lower numbers than usual.
? ? Many thanks to all the people who helped count this year,
and thanks to Willapa Hills Audubon and Skamokawa Kayak Center
for sponsoring the count!
