saturday was the first time i'd had a chance to visit JBP since the big
windstorm, and it was obvious much had changed. trees were still in the
process of being carted away, and either the trails were still covered with
junk from then (not likely) or said junk was still being loosened from the
past few days...

anyway, among the better sightings: juvenile eagle, plying a thermal near
juanita beach, and an adult eagle entering the nesting tree near the western
boardwalk... a decent-sized raft of coots in the midbay who were joined by
the normal riffraff (bufflehead, gadwall, canvasbacks, ring-necked ducks,
the occasional scaup, and pied-billed grebes) and by the not-so-normal for
the location (american wigeon and green-winged teal)...

cormorants were lively, the great blue heron on the osprey pole preferred to
spend its day doing nothing but sleeping, and the wood ducks were only seen
late when the lighting started to deteriorate...

only one hooded merganser was seen (male), and he was out with the riffraff
raft, but we did have normal numbers of common mergansers... a downy
woodpecker was seen and heard in the poplars near the western stub, and at
least one belted kingfisher was heard twice, from opposite ends of the bay,
but never seen...
