Hi Tweeters,

I was one of the lucky few who got to see the Whooper
this morning. I am terrible at directions so lets see
if I can explain the location, it was on the north
side of Marsh Street about 1/4 mile west of Hwy 9. It
was just west of Choice Turf Driving Range, which does
not look a typical driving range by the way, there are
no nets at all.

It was way out in flooded fields north with a very
large swan flock. Bob Stallcop showed up while I was
there and got some nice but distant looks with me. I
left about 8:20 to go and try for some other state
rarities.

I called it into the RBA so I kinda feel bad it could
not be relocated but that is birding. A good strategy
seems to be look for the big swan flock early. I
dipped on the three hoped for species. While I was
looking for the Black-headed Gull, Cameron Cox saw it
and I did get on it but I'm not counting it because I
cannot say I honestly saw it well enough.

A beautiful day to end 2006. Inspired by Connie
Sidles big year last year which she graciously shared
with the rest of us Tweeters I did an unofficial big
year. I kept it very low key to keep some pressure
off and did far better than I thought I could and that
includes missing some I "should" have seen. The WOS
convention, great visiting rare birds and a few
pelagic trips helped out. Plus god knows how many car
miles driven and how many Tweeters emails either
printed out or scrawled on to scratch paper I saw 321
species for 2006 in Washington State.

Along this vein I want to congratulate Matt Bartels in
shattering the King County big year record, way to go.
It was fun to keep running into him in the field
looking for the next one.

Happy New Year
Cheers,

Kathy
