Hi Tweeters. Late Monday afternoon there was a break in the weather which I
took advantage of and walked the neighborhood (always with binoculars).
There is a new park behind the Four Seasons Apt. building (2400 block of
Boyer Ave E.) where is it easy to see the ducks on Portage Bay from the 520
overpass to the Montlake Community Center. I thought that I saw two Redhead
sleeping but was not totally sure because of the bad light. I have returned
to the area the last two mornings and saw them again this morning....yes,
they are Redheads. This morning they were hanging out under the 520
overpass. This winter flock of birds seems to congregate more in the
evenings near the playfield and disperse throughout the Bay during the day
so that seeing them presents more of a problem. As I recall last winter
Redheads were seen on Portage Bay most of the winter near the Aqua Verde
Restaurant which is close, to the University Bridge.
Birds seen late Monday afternoon 1/30:
Pied-billed Grebes (35)
Double-crested Cormorant (10)
Canada Goose (12)
Gadwall (20)
American Wigeon (30)
Mallard (10)
Green-winged Teal (14)
Redhead (2)
Ring-necked Duck (20)
Lesser Scaup (12)
Bufflehead (24)
Hooded Merganser (8)
American Coot (250++)
On the soccer fiels there were a couple dozen Glacous-winged Gulls, one Mew
Gull and hundreds of Crows in the trees and on the fields before taking off
for their evening roost.
Additional birds that I have seen or heard on my two quick morning visits:
Great Blue Heron (1), Bald Eagle (1), Northern Flicker (2), singing Winter
Wren and Song Sparrows and flock of Bushtits and Black-capped Chickadees.
