While hiking the Sourdough Ridge Trail in Mount Rainier N.P. one summer, we came across an American Pipit nest quite near the trail. They had three babies and were actively feeding the young. We watched them forage about 300 yards from the nest, then return with insects. The nest was located below and underneath a tuft of grass hanging over a natural depression. It was well concealed. It was something I never expected to see and thus will always remember.
