Hello All,
Today under clear skies and a warm sun (60 DEGREES) we joined Ginger and
Rodger Shoemake on a mission to see the reported Long-tailed Ducks at the
mouth of the Clearwater River. This species was a life bird for them. So we
drove across the Snake River into Idaho and along HWY 12 to the duck ponds
near the Railroad bridge. Walking along the dike west of the RR bridge we
stopped and scoped the entire mouth of the Clearwater River-nothing save for
a few Bufflehead. Then as if on cue the five Long-tailed Ducks flew in and
splashed down right out in front of us. Perfect light and distance. There
were three males and two females.
Other birds observed were........

In Idaho along the dike trail.......
Barrows Goldeneye.........130
Common Goldeneye........3
Wood Duck......................35+
Black-crowned Night-Heron...1

In Asotin Co., WA.........

Eurasian Wigeon........1 drake at the park east of Costco.
Bewicks Wren.........2 birds, one south of Asotin near Doug Bar, one near
Chief Timothy Park.
Canyon Wren..........2 birds south of Asotin near Doug Bar.
Glaucous Gull.........1 second winter bird near MP 430 along HWY 12.
Herring Gull.............20+ at MP 430
Prairie Falcon............1 adult with antennae attached to the mantle near
Chief Timothy park

Later, Mike
