After hearing about the Johnson/DeBay swans from a photographer at West
90, Martha Jordan's directions and a potentially drier day sent me north
to explore. I found the Reserve with no trouble (per the great
directions in her Jan 30th post). The swans were many, but concentrated
on the far side of the field. I got my best views of the smaller groups
of trumpeters arriving to feed. When I scanned the line of trees edging
the field, I was delighted to count 14 juvenile bald eagles and 2 adults
perched and watching. By the time I left the Reserve, there were 8
eagles soaring overhead.

In a field north of LaConner (off of Jensen-Pearle) I was surprised to
see a group of 20 great blue herons. Unfortunately the white object on
the fence line out past the herons refused to transform itself from a
white plastic bucket into the snowy owl I was hoping for.

Another group of 50 - 75 trumpeter swans was feeding just south of
Conroy on the road toStanwood. One of the group was banded, but I was
unable to read it.

Many signs of spring--yellow mustard flowers, pussywillows both sleek
white and fuzzy, sneeze-producing yellow, singing dark-eyed juncos, song
sparrows, and red-winged blackbirds.

And there was NO RAIN!! :>)
