Ever since a Pelagic Cormorant was reported in the Columbia River
near Corbett, Multnomah County, and another was seen at Woodland in
Cowlitz County I have been checking the cormorant roost on the rock reef
just downstream from the mouth of the Sandy River. Today (2-6-06) I
finally spotted a PELAGIC CORMORANT fly out of the nearly one hundred
cormorants that roost on the rocks and power transmission towers on the
reef. I assume that this is the same bird that was seen earlier just a
few miles upstream of this communal roost. Unfortunately the vantage
point for this reef is on Georgia-Pacific's Lady Island which is closed
to the public.
